Behind the Poem: The Clog

In my third Macabre Masterpiece book, Vile Humanity, I decided to get even more creative in my rhyme scheme and use more poetic tools. One poem in particular, The Clog, is unlike any other poem I have written before. Even though the poem is in Chapter 2, it was actually the first poem I wrote for the book, and I wrote it in a motel room after my mother and I had lost our home to a fire. The poem had no title when I started writing it, and it was originally supposed to be a rap until I formatted and structured it into a poem. I was reciting it in my head and began writing it on my phone. As more and more ideas and rhymes came to me, I wrote them down in the moment. After moving some words and lines around, I formatted it again and, after reading it, realized I had created a truly unique poem.

The poem is about how a body has been neglected and is decaying, rotting, and losing form and slowly breaking down in every way possible. This is described in a unique repetitive rhyme scheme that simultaneously uses alliteration. By doing this, the poem gives off three things all at the same time: rhyme, the use of the same letter(alliteration), and the sound the similar words make, which comes into play as the poem progresses. Because the poem was originally supposed to be a rap, it’s why the words stick out so much and why, when you read them, they tend to come out at such a fast rate. Why is the poem called The Clog? Remember when I mentioned the use of alliteration and the sound certain words make? Well, the first letter used repetitively is C. This is followed by the repetitive use of the letter L while also using the sound the letters make, which creates an O sound. Finally, the final few lines use the letter G while also rhyming. This poem is by far one of the most intricate and well-versed that I’ve written and one that I hope people will enjoy and appreciate, especially now that you know the truth behind it.
